Standards and Reagents Management

Many analyses require the use of standards or reagents. The properties of these standards and reagents are recorded in LIMS. These properties include information about them such as the vendor and expiry date.

They also include the results associated with the standard / reagent that are required in calculations in the analyses where they are used. In this respect they are treated by LIMS as samples in their own right and they will be logged in and their results entered just like any other sample. These results are sometimes vendor supplied, but often determined in the lab by analysis.

When a standard is used in an analysis its results are not entered directly. Instead, the standard being used is identified by its ID chosen from a list of unexpired standards of the required type. The result is then made available to the calculation indirectly.

Of course, analyses of one standard may rely on results from other standards. So it is not unusual for the LIMS to be able to trace an analysis back to a primary standard through a secondary standard and a tertiary standard.

When a standard or reagent expires it will no longer be available for selection. They may also be deactivated manually or automatically.
