LabWare has extended the LIMS paradigm to support a paperless laboratory environment.  Traditionally, LIMS has been good at recording, tracking, and managing sample / test / result related information.  Until now, labs that implemented LIMS were still required to use paper to capture information on worksheets and in notebooks.  Examples of such information include:
  • Standard & Reagent preparation
  • Instrument Calibration, Review and Revalidation details
  • Sample batch environmental and preparation summaries
  • Observations pertaining to the testing
  • Calculation worksheets
  • Miscellaneous checklists required by GxP and ISO

In response to this unmet need, LabWare developed Electronic Analytical Worksheets.  Electronic Analytical Worksheets use Adobe AcrobatTM technology, embedded within the LIMS application to mimic paper forms.  However, these forms have significant advantages over paper forms because they are tied to the LIMS database.

Adobe Acrobat 5.0 provides the electronic media to store and retrieve Analytical Worksheets.  Static and Dynamic LabWare LIMS table fields are accessible to these Worksheets.  Data entered through LabWare LIMS can be input directly to an Electronic Worksheet at the instrument workstation running LabWare LIMS, or remotely with a notepad computer running Adobe Acrobat 5.0 in a secure environment.  Transcription errors are eliminated since data is linked directly with Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) or eform technology.  The analyst can document instrumental and manual results from analyses without the need to use paper worksheets to transcribe data from the laboratory environment to the workstation environment.

Worksheets include the following functionality:
  • Browse and select data from the LIMS (or other databases)
  • Validate field entries using formats and drop-down lists
  • Annotations, such as notes and highlights
  • Electronic signatures, including PKI support
  • Append attachments like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets
  • Automatically merge LIMS reports
  • Store data in the LIMS database
  • Life-cycle support
  • Full review and approval
  • Hyperlinks within the worksheet and to attachments
  • Direct integration of instruments
