 | As useful as e-mail can be, it can struggle with some key requirements within laboratory environments, especially within regulated industries. For example, many e-mail systems are considered difficult (if not impossible) to validate. Another problem is that a critical message may be ignored if the recipient is not able to check their messages.

Alert Management is built into LabWare LIMS, so that you can send a message to any other users within the system. If the user is currently logged in, they will get a pop-up window within seconds. If they are not logged in, then when they do, the message will come up immediately. Where Alert Manager exceeds standard e-mail is that LabWare LIMS can forward any unread messages to other users, without requiring the normal recipient to set up an "out-of-office" scenario.

Alerts can be supplemented with e-mail so that LabWare LIMS users who do not log in very often can be made aware of pending Alerts. Alerts can also be system generated, so that automatic messages are sent based on events. For example, if an analysis is updated and approved, an Alert can be created to all users affected by these changes. The process of acknowledging the Alert can be considered evidence that the user was notified; since Alerts are permanently stored in the database, it can be used for messaging within regulated industries.
