Electronic Worksheets, A Paramount Tool for the Modern Paperless Laboratory
This paper will be presented at PITTCON 2004 as part of

The Paperless Laboratory: New Directions in Regulatory Compliance Workshop
Presented by Keith Wipprecht, LabWare, Inc.
at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, IL

A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) serves as the central repository for all sample submissions and analytical result data generated by the laboratories as a new product or formulation moves through development in R&D, or is tested in QC to measure and assure consistent quality. In order to achieve a Compliant Paperless Laboratory, the LIMS must have essential functionality to replace paper driven processes with compliant electronic equivalents. While LIMS has traditionally been capable of automating the collection of results from laboratory instruments, a key component that’s been missing is an effective means to capture all of the experimental meta-data generated during an assay. Laboratories have traditionally relied upon paper notebooks as the primary repository for this information. This talk will explore a novel approach to reducing paper-based processes in the laboratory by using Electronic Worksheets that are created, reviewed, and uniquely tracked from within LIMS. Several key advantages of using Electronic Worksheets versus paper driven processes will be examined, including:
  • Electronic Worksheets can bring together related analytical information in a searchable and re-usable format
  • Experimental results and related reports from instruments can be appended to the Worksheet as a contiguous document
  • Completed Worksheets can be automatically routed for review and approval
  • Worksheets support enhanced scientific collaboration because they are in a portable document format that can be emailed to a colleague
