Keynote abstract: The IT industry has a tremendous record of innovation and just when you thought it could be slowing down there is a massive injection of new ideas and technology. The talk will concentrate on what is coming in the IT world and relate future developments to clinical laboratories. I will cover a wide range of topics in the IT field, from processors and massively parallel machines, to grid computing, from networking bandwidth, to pervasive computing. Drawing on examples of real client projects and research work underway in a wide range of areas the talk will provide a balanced view of where IT R&D is heading, and what possibilities this opens up for novel applications of new technology. The last few years have shown pointers towards a more mature industry, with more agreement on workable, flexible, open standards but much remains to be done if the potential for life enhancing IT is to be reached.
