NIAID scientists and grantees are well positioned to rapidly develop COVID-19 diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines. These projects include conducting basic research to understand how the virus infects cells and causes disease, and what interventions can prevent and stop the spread of disease. In fact, within two weeks of the discovery of COVID-19, NIAID researchers had determined how the virus enters cells. And within two months sites had begun Phase 1 trials of a treatment (Remdesivir) and a vaccine (mRNA-1273).

In response to requests from laboratories and from the Australian Government’s Department of Health, and in line with the Enhancing Laboratory Capacity and Capability contract RCPAQAP has with the Department of Health, RCPAQAP Biosecurity will be offering a proficiency testing program (PTP) for the 2019-novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. This will assist with the response to the outbreak of COVID-19, a respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province and recently declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the WHO.
RCPAQAP Biosecurity have organized for two rounds of a PHLN Module: SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses. Round 1 was offered to a select number of laboratories however, Round 2 is to be offered to both public and private Australian laboratories free of charge in this instance, with the support of the Department of Health, in recognition of the extraordinary circumstances of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. |
