What is a LIMS?

LIMS stands for Laboratory Information Management System.

A laboratory information management system is software that manages the daily operations of a laboratory, from sample receipt through testing, result review, reporting, and data storage. It replaces paper-based and spreadsheet-driven processes with a centralized, auditable record of everything that happens in the lab.

Modern LIMS handles sample tracking, test scheduling, instrument data capture, QC management, compliance documentation, and reporting within a single platform. For enterprise laboratories running multiple sites, a LIMS provides the standardization and visibility needed to keep quality consistent across locations.

LabWare LIMS is built for enterprise laboratories that need the full capabilities of a laboratory information management system, not a simplified point solution. Whether your lab runs routine QC testing or complex multi-protocol studies, LabWare LIMS is configured to match your workflows.

LIMS, ELN, and QMS: What's the Difference?

Laboratories evaluating software options commonly come across three overlapping categories: LIMS, ELN, and QMS. Each serves a distinct purpose, and knowing the differences helps determine which system, or combination of systems, fits your lab.

LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) manages the operational workflow of the lab: sample tracking, test scheduling, result capture, instrument interfacing, lot management, and compliance reporting. It tracks what happened to every sample, who tested it, and what the result was.

ELN (Electronic Lab Notebook) captures the experimental record: the scientist's documentation of methods, observations, calculations, and conclusions. Where LIMS is process-oriented, ELN is researcher-oriented. When integrated, the two systems allow research data and operational data to be accessed from a single environment. LabWare LIMS incorporates native ELN functionality as a fully integrated add-on, allowing labs to manage both operational and experimental data within a single platform. Learn more about LabWare ELN.

QMS (Quality Management System) manages quality processes at the organizational level: SOPs, deviations, CAPAs, training records, and audit management. A QMS works alongside LIMS rather than replacing it. A laboratory running a LIMS with solid compliance features covers much of what a standalone QMS would handle at the bench level, while the QMS manages the broader organizational quality framework.

Who Uses a LIMS?

Laboratories across nearly every industry that runs quality control and analytical testing rely on LIMS software.

In pharmaceutical and biopharma settings, LIMS manages the documentation and traceability required for ISO 17025 for testing laboratories, FDA's 21 CFR Part 11 for electronic records management, EU Annex 11 for computerized systems used in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, and CLIA regulations for clinical laboratories.

Food and beverage manufacturers use LIMS for QC sample testing, ingredient verification, and shelf-life studies. Water and environmental testing labs handle high sample volumes and chain-of-custody documentation through LIMS.

Mining and metals, oil and gas, contract research, forensics, and clinical diagnostics labs have different workflows but the same underlying requirement: test results that are accurate, traceable, and defensible.

LIMS provides that foundation regardless of the industry.

LabWare LIMS is deployed in laboratories across pharmaceutical, food and beverage, environmental, petrochemical, forensics, clinical, bioanalysis, contract services, and mining and metals industries.

Benefits of Using a LIMS

Laboratories that move from paper-based or spreadsheet systems to a LIMS typically see improvements across several core areas of operations:
